We are seeking a Genetic Counselor who will assess and counsel individuals and families regarding inherited cancer risk and risk management as well as participate in cancer genetics case conferences, community outreach events, medical staff and consumer education, collaborative research projects, program meetings, and program development. The Genetic Counselor will provide these services at DFCC, as well as service outreach clinics to other Providence Ministries both in person and through telemedicine.

In this position you will:

  • Provide genetic counseling for patients at-risk for a hereditary cancer syndrome with required pre and post test elements.

  • Conduct intake interviews, to include:

  • Ascertain problem, concerns and reasons for referral.

  • Take a complete medical and family history.

  • Arrange for indicated lab tests and required medical records.

  • Arrange for return visits as appropriate.

  • Synthesize medical consultation reports for the patient, referring, and treating physicians.

  • Present cases and participate in summary appropriate tumor boards to summarize cancer genetic case conference for review of personal and family history, genetic testing results, risk management recommendations and identification of other clinical and research options appropriate/available.

  • Assist program development, clinic design, billing and tracking mechanisms in the development of cancer genetic service line and in additional hereditary cancer risk assessment service lines.

  • Participate in collaborative cancer genetics research, including enrolling subjects into a cancer genetics registry, coordinating studies, and assisting in the development or identification of additional research protocols for individuals and families at high risk or undergoing genetic cancer risk assessment.

  • Develop educational materials for patients and providers regarding genetic cancer risk assessment and/or specific hereditary cancer syndromes.

  • Participate in in-service education for healthcare personnel and marketing events for the general public.

  • Participate in cancer case conferences, program meetings, community events, and Grand Rounds when appropriate.

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling/Clinical Genetics

  • Genetic Counselor must be board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling

  • ABGC Board Eligible and CA Department of Public Health Genetic Counseling license (temporary is acceptable); ABGC Board eligibility refers to gaining Active Candidate Status (ACS)

  • Experience providing genetic counseling and risk assessment.Experience providing genetic counseling and risk assessment

  • Collection of detailed personal and family histories and construction of accurate pedigrees

  • Retrieval and review of medical records for key affected individuals

  • Pedigree assessment and recognition of cancer susceptibility syndromes

  • Syndrome cancer risk assessment and mutation probability calculation

  • Familial cancer risk assessment and empiric cancer risk calculation

  • Psychosocial assessment, support, and/or referral

  • Identification of appropriate genetic testing, appropriate individual for testing, selection of laboratory, coordination of testing, facilitation of insurance authorization/verification, interpretation of test results and risk management recommendations as well as identification, selection and coordination of appropriate genetic cancer research opportunities

  • Ability to effectively communicate genetic concepts of cancer risk information to patients, consumers, and healthcare providers.

  • Skilled in informed consent discussion, including issues of privacy, confidentiality, and genetic discrimination

  • Comfortable working in a multi-disciplinary setting with various healthcare professionals and specialists

  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and chosen pedigree database
